Hi,
We are migrating our storageplatform used by vCloud Director 5.1 to newer models (EMC CX4 to VNX).
We are using vCloud director 5.1 and have datastore clusters configured with some LUN's in it. We have set the datastores and clusters to disabled in the vCloud UI and started to set the lun's in maint mode within vSphere. Most of the VM's moved to other LUN's but got some warnings about CDROM/ISO's that were still mounted. We applied the vmotion anyway and had to figure out the faults later.
First of all, I think it's weird in an IAAS model there is still dependancy on this cdrom being mounted, considering the fact we don't control the VM's but rather just provide resources. Second, when I hit disable, my thought would be that vCloud would make the call to put the lun / datastore in maint.
Second; in vCloud it's not possible to remove a mounted ISO from a template from within the vCloud UI, it's kinda like this problem: Re: Eject CD/DVD from vApp Template
I've tweeted @fojta for feedback (I like his articles, specially these 3: Datastore Migrations in vCloud Director – Part 1 of 3: Introduction | Tom Fojta's Blog) regarding whether it was safe to unmount the ISO / CD in vSphere, rather then vCloud UI. He confirmed it should not break anything. We did unmount them in vSphere, spawn some vm's from the template and it still worked. When you don't want to remove the iso from cdrom in vSphere, you can also make the template go live in vCloud UI, eject the cd (which does not work), mount another iso, eject it and revert it to template).
Now, the real question ![]()
What is the proper way to migrate from older storage to newer storage? A step by step would be nice, as I see there is not much info for on the web and the suggested 'work arounds' are pretty stupid (going to vCloud UI and selecting the same storage profile, thus triggering the VM to migrate to itself, but then use the new LUN). I really think this could benefit to many more users, so any help is appreciated.
